Our first event was the Nutcracker with Sue. Since Lydia has been so into ballet I thought going to The Nutcracker would be fun. It was lovely but sadly didn't start until 8:00 pm (10:00 VA time). I knew this when I purchased the tickets and tried to find a matinee but had no luck and decided to just hope for the best. It turned out pretty well. Lydia did really enjoy the dances and costumes and had a nice time. We ended up leaving before it was over but made it through all the different dances by the individual groups which is my favorite part. So at least 3/4 of the way through.
Swimming in hot springs. Going swimming in Grandma Sue's heated pool was near the top of the list of things Jared and Lydia wanted to do so we made it happen. We sadly picked one of the worst days. It started out pretty nice but by the time we made it to the pool, around 3:00 a crazy wind storm had picked up. There is lots of construction near the pool and we were all having a hard time keeping our eyes open because it was so cold and the air was so dirty. Not our best swimming experience but we made it happen.
The next day Mark and I went to a session at the Provo City temple and then out to eat at Rodizios, an item very high Mark's list of things to do in Utah. I'm not sure what happened exactly but Mark was incredibly slow that morning and we didn't get to the desk of the temple until 9:53. We asked if they could please hold the session which they agreed to but told us to hustle. Of course we had never been to that temple so we had no idea where we were going and had to rent clothes so it took longer than usual but we made it. I was pretty irritated so it was not the best session for me. While in the dressing room Mark actually saw his nephew Kimball who jsut returned from his mission in July. It was so random that they saw each other. Kimball and his girlfriend came over for lunch later in the week and it was fun to catch up with him.
We also went over to Draper city one night to check out their "Tree of Life." It was so beautiful and looked just like the tree depicted in paintings. While looking up things to do in UT I saw that there was a Bahama Bucks in Draper so after checking out the lights we stopped in for a treat and it was just as good as I remembered from TX. We had really bad phone service in Draper and could not get our google maps to work so we were fortunate we found the tree. As we were driving back to I 15 we were looking for Bahama Bucks, (I really wanted them to get to try it. It was pretty high on my list of things to do in Utah) in downtown Draper and all of a sudden I saw it. It was weird because I did not notice it on the way in and we drove right by it but I saw it just in time for Mark to do a U turn. They all loved it.
The next day we headed up to SLC to check out the Grand America Hotel and the lights at Temple Square. A friend recommended the hotel as it has a huge gingerbread house and festive holiday window displays. I loved it. The hotel is super fancy and the windows were fun. We were lucky to have really nice weather for walking around temple square and the lights were beautiful. I for some reason thought that there were more lights at Temple Square in the past but regardless it was beautiful and so well done. Parking was crazy but we figured it out and had a nice evening. Before we went Lydia had an exciting afternoon. Her two top teeth had been loose for awhile and that afternoon she got Mark to take them out. We of course had her sing "All I want for Christmas is my 2 front teeth" and recorded it for future viewings.
The next day we drove down to Spanish Fork and Salem to check out more lights. It was a fun outing. Spanish Fork was one of those pay and drive through to see lights. They did have some fun exhibits. We also stopped by the suit store in Provo. Mark and his Mom had gone down and picked out a suit for him earlier in the week and they had still not gotten back to them about its delivery. Sue wanted Mark to have it for Christmas but that didn't happen. They were both quite irritated. We ended up leaving Utah without it and hopefully Mark will either pick it up from the JOS A Bank store here or they will ship it.
Jared was in love with these Killer Whales (of course). It was pretty unique.
Since Christmas Eve was a Sunday it was pretty low key day. By this time I was feeling pretty ready to head back to VA and knew a day at home attempting to be reverent was going to be hard. The night before I mentioned that I might just go to church and then stay for all the wards meetings. They were all going to be singing Christmas songs and hopefully giving great talks with fun Christmas stories so it seemed like a nice way to spend Christmas Eve. I invited others to join me but no one took me up on it. I think its one of the nicest Sundays of the year and was glad I stayed. In between wards I practiced playing the piano. I was often too intimidated to play at Sue's house because I don't really like to play in front of people and enjoyed playing at the church. Sadly there were only 2 wards meeting that day not three but it was nice to get to sing extra songs and have quiet personal time to reflect on the importance of Christmas. That evening we read the nativity and sang Christmas songs. Jared was a Shepherd and a wiseman, Lydia was an angel and Mark and I were Jospeh and Mary.
Christmas morning Jared and Lydia were thrilled to wake up to a White Christmas. It really is magical. The grown ups had seen the snow start the night before and were impressed that as much stuck. After opening presents we went out with Cathryn's twins and played in the snow. It was great. The fun ended when Jared accidentally injured Ian but it was fun while it lasted. Christmas morning at someone else's house is weird. Not bad just weird. We hadn't been away from our house for Christmas since Jared was 2 months old. We were not expecting many gifts and had told Jared and Lydia to remember how we celebrated in VA but we all ended up with more gifts than we expected. So much that we had to borrow a suitcase from Sue and check 2 instead of 1. Mark's brother Steve came over with his 6 grown kids and their little families for Sue's birthday brunch and we enjoyed visiting. It was a nice day.
The day after Christmas we drove up to Kayesville to visit some friends. We met up with the Barton's from Egypt who we always love catching up with and then some friends who were here in Virginia last year. Miley was in my preschool class and it was fun to check out their new home and catch up.
Our last day there we went to see Cocoa and out to eat and In N Out Burger. We all thought Cocoa was great. Jared kept talking about how he wanted to see Star Wars, but he will have to wait until he is older. He still liked Cooca and I liked it a lot more than I thought I would.
In between these outings there was movie watching, (we watched "The Shack" with Cathryn, Paul and Sue, It was horrible! I had seen previews and knew I didn't want to watch it but I did and cried so much! I know there were some good points and could see them but oh my gosh it was exhausting) cider and hot chocolate drinking, grandma snuggling, planks building, game playing, visiting and wii playing. There were also moments of homesickness, fighting, illness, and bad manners but overall it was very nice to see family and to be somewhere different so we could do different things but there is truly no place like home for the holidays!
